Construction of the new trail bridge at Helmcken Road is underway and expected to be complete this spring.
The trail bridge, adjacent to the rail bridge, is one of five construction projects in the first phase of building the E&N Rail Trail, a 14.3 kilometre multi-use trail from Victoria to Langford.
The first phase of the trail includes:
- Paving 2.5 kilometres of Galloping Goose Regional Trail from Atkins Avenue to Wale Road
- 1.8 kilometres of trail construction from Jacklin Road to Selwyn Road/Atkins Avenue intersection with connection to Savory Elementary School
- Bridge construction at Hereward Road and Old Island Highway at Four-Mile Hill
- 2.5 kilometres of trail construction from Esquimalt Road to Colville Road /Admirals Road intersection
- 2.3 kilometres of trail construction from Colville Road /Admirals Road intersection to Four-Mile Bridge
The rail trail is a cycling and walking pathway being built along the rail corridor providing a multi-use transportation link between Victoria and the West Shore.
Phase one is estimated to cost $11.86 million with completion by the end of 2010. The entire trail is expected to cost $22.7 million. The Capital Regional District has received $11.5 million from the Federal Gas Tax Fund and the B.C. Local Motion Fund. In March the federal government provided $1 million to trail construction and paving through Recreational Infrastructure Canada.
Trail has now also been constructed in various segments through all four regional districts on the Victoria sub from Victoria to Courtenay.
A section of trail from the City of Duncan to the new ‘Commons’ retail centre north of town in North Cowichan was completed in the fall of 2011 by the City of Duncan and the Municipality of North Cowichan.
The former CP line, owned by the ICF from Duncan to Lake Cowichan, is complete making for a very enjoyable hiking and biking experience. The Trail can be accessed from Sherman Rd in North Cowichan and winds it way right into the heart of Lake Cowichan. This trail project was undertaken by the Cowichan Valley Regional District.
Further north on the Victoria sub as part of the Trans Canada Trail, the CVRD with support from the Chemainus Rotary constructed trail from the Chemainus Rd crossing at Crozier Road along side the Mt. Brenton Golf Course through Chemainus to Elm St.
A section through Saltair has also been completed.
There is an extensive network of trail through the City of Nanaimo and the Nanaimo Regional District with a newly planned trail project to run along side the rebuilt Nanaimo Heritage Station.
Both Lantzville and Qualicum have segments of trail complete with an additional section being planned for Lanztville.
The City of Courtenay in partnership with the Rotary Club of Courtenay completed the 2011 trail construction program with trail built along the corridor north of the Courtenay Station. Plans are underway for trail to be constructed south of the station in 2012.
